Thank You for a Phenomenal Year!

Members of the Mighty New York District, Kiwanians, Friends,

Thank you. I just wanted to start by thanking each of you for making this year such an amazing experience and such a phenomenal success.

On April 1, 2009, we knew we would one day reach the end of our time together. It feels like just yesterday that the 2009-2010 service year began, and yet we have already arrived at its end. This is not surprising, however, when we consider all that has happened this year and all we have done.

Over the past year, we set many rigorous goals for ourselves, and through our collective efforts, we have been fortunate to have experienced a wealth of successes. Our district has welcomed five new Circle K clubs this year, increasing our membership to 946 – the largest we have been in many years. Our members have performed close to 30,000 hours of documented service to their communities, supporting the four Circle K International Service Partners, the KPTC, Kamp Kiwanis, and a plethora of other organizations and causes. We have increased membership recognition programs in our district to recognize the great work done by our hardest-working members and clubs. We have successfully planned and executed the first-ever New York District Large Scale Service Project, and our District Convention, at which we celebrated our fiftieth anniversary, was attended by over 180 people – nearly double the attendance we have had in recent years.

I am so proud of all that we have accomplished, and while I wish our time together were not so short, I ask you to keep in mind the words of Ida Scott Taylor: “One day at a time – this is enough. Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone; and do not be troubled about the future, for it has not yet come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering.” Make each moment the best it can be, and treasure each of your experiences.

It has been such an honor and pleasure to serve as your 2009-2010 New York District Governor. This year has taught me so much, and you have all made an impact on me in some way. I will forever treasure this experience as one of the greatest of my life, and I will always treasure the memories we have all made together.

I have every confidence in the abilities of the 2010-2011 New York District Board to do an amazing job, and I look forward to seeing the coming year brings. Best of luck to each of you with all of your future pursuits, whether in Circle K or in the “real world.” I look forward to working with all of you again in the future. Please remember that I am always here and always willing to lend a hand.

Coming to District Convention? Interested in sharing your voice with the rest of NYCKI? Take part in the first-ever NYCKI Essay Contest!

This year, the New York District of Circle K International will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Since its inception, many prominent changes have taken place throughout Circle K International. Please write an essay of no more than 750 words that describes your vision for Circle K in the year 2060. What changes do you foresee? How do you believe such changes will come about? Be descriptive and creative!

Tip Me: 7 social events to warm you up

Plan a bonfire. A night of s’mores, campfire songs, and stories is a great way to keep warm during the winter season.
Start dancing. A dance party is a popular and fun way to get everyone off their feet.
Go roller skating. Or try the roller rink.
Have a coffee house social. Coffee houses are great places to socialize and get to know other CKI members.
Hold a Wii social. It’s easy to plan and is a great indoor activity.
Host a baking night! The goodies can be used as a treat for a club meeting or a fundraiser.
Plan a game night and get the whole gang involved with Twister or Limbo.

Consider service through Builders Club

There is a well kept Kiwanis secret, which I bring to your attention, so that maybe it won’t be a secret much longer. I bet you didn’t know that Circle K clubs are allowed, under Kiwanis guidelines, to co-sponsor Builders Clubs, and get service credit for their interaction with middle school students just like Kiwanians do with Circle K clubs.

Since I am not sure that many Circle K members even know what Builders Club is, I should tell you that Builders Club is a student led organization which, like Circle K, builds leaders through service. Builders Club members are middle/junior high school aged students between the ages of 12–15. Like Key Club, they have service partnerships with UNICEF and the March of Dimes, and the members of the respective clubs perform various service projects, such as fundraising for HIV/Aids prevention in Africa, reading to kindergarteners or kicking off a recycling program.

Hopefully, you remember what it was like to be in your early teens, floundering and looking for positive adult role models who were NOT your parents. This is not to say that parents are not role models, they surely are, however, young teens can often be somewhat rebellious, and don’t always accept what their parents say without questioning them. As members of CKI, you could mentor these young folk, and help improve their self esteem and lead them to higher academic achievement. God knows they would probably rather listen to a college student than some “older” Kiwanian anyway.

We all know that middle school years are a pivotal age, and Builders Club helps to steer kids on the right path, and give them a chance to have fun and show that they can do through a commitment to community service. You can help in this process. Circle K, in conjunction with a Kiwanis club (perhaps your own), can join together and form a Builders Club in your community. Presumably the Kiwanis club can provide the funds and the CKI members can provide the time to help install the Kiwanis-family tradition in these very impressionable teens.

So the next time your Circle K club is looking for a way to obtain more service hours, consider forming a Builders Club nearby. You only need 15 student members to sign up, and they need not even be coordinated through a formal school program. You can set up a Builders Club program through a local Boys & Girls Club or at the local public library with a study group that meets there. Obviously you need to have advisors, but you should think “outside the box,” the possibilities are endless and the positive effects of your time would be immeasurable.

Don Forsyth "Circle K" Scholarship

Greetings New York!

The Don Forsyth “Circle K” Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 in loving memory of Mr. Forsyth by his family in honor of his passion for Circle K. Mr. Forsyth believed in the goals of Circle K and worked diligently to expand membership of the organization. To him, his reward was to see fine, young Circle K members enhance society by giving of themselves - helping those who need help.

To honor Mr. Forsyth’s generous involvement in Circle K, the Don Forsyth “Circle K” Scholarship Fund makes scholarship award each year to provide recognition and financial assistance to individual members of Circle K clubs who have demonstrated exceptional community service. The recipients must be in good academic standing and entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year at a two-year or four-year college or university in New York State. Awards are based on eligibility criteria described in the application material. Financial need is not a factor in this award. The 2010 distribution for this award is $4,500.

Eligibility Requirements:

1. Applicant must demonstrate exceptional community service.

2. Applicant must be a member of a Circle K club at a college in New York State and be in good standing with the home club and district organization. Applicant’s name must be listed on their home club’s current Dues and Member Report Form.

3. Applicant must have full-time student status during the academic years preceding and during the year in which the scholarship is awarded.

4. Applicant must be enrolled in good standing with a two-year or four-year college or university in New York State.

5. The Don Forsyth “Circle K” Scholarship is for one year only and is not renewable.

Selection Process:

1. All scholarship applications must be completed in full and submitted to the Community Foundation (address below) by March 5, 2010.

2. Scholarship recipients and their colleges will be notified as soon as the selection committee has reviewed all applications.

Scholarship Fund Disbursement:

1. A total scholarship of $4,500 will be paid directly to the college or university the student attends. Award money will be deposited with the college to cover tuition and fees, books, instructional supplies, or living expenses.

I hope you all enjoyed the holidays. This will likely be my last post of the year (and of the decade!), so I wanted to use it as an opportunity to share with you the words of William Arthur Ward:

“Another fresh new year is here . . .
Another year to live!
To banish worry, doubt, and fear,
To love and laugh and give!

This bright new year is given me
To live each day with zest . . .
To daily grow and try to be
My highest and my best!

I have the opportunity
Once more to right some wrongs,
To pray for peace, to plant a tree,

Midnight will bring carry us into another new year. Think back on the last year and the last decade. Consider the choices you have made and the challenges you have faced, but do not let yourself feel regret for any missteps or for any lost opportunity. Instead, look forward to the countless opportunities resting in the days ahead of you, and strive each day to be your best. I wish you and your families all the best in the New Year!

Hello Members of the New York District!

It seems like just yesterday that we were all at NY Speaking. District Convention is quickly approaching and before that, we would like all of you to take a look at the DCON Awards Packet. There are a total of 24 awards, ranging from Outstanding Club Officer Awards, to Outstanding Kiwanian and Faculty Advisor Awards. There will also be awards for the variety of different service projects your club has held or participated in this service year. Show your club’s creativity, and show us all the work you have done by creating the Best Club Scrapbook in NY District! There are plenty of opportunities for your club to be recognized for everything you have done this year!

Please take the time over Winter Break to review the Awards Packet and nominate those who you believe are deserving and eligible for each award. This is an excellent opportunity to acknowledge and reward those members and those clubs who have gone above and beyond the call of service. This will also be a great way to share what you have done with other clubs in the district, and it may serve as an inspiration to others to help plan successful events in the future. We all would love to hear what you have to say, so please encourage all officers and members of your club to fill out an application.

All awards are based upon nominations, and all rules and regulations can be found at the beginning of the awards packet. All awards nominations must be received by District Administrator John Keegan no later than Monday, February 8, 2010. There will be no late submissions accepted.

Hello NYCKI!

It's time to start thinking about District Convention 2010, and the District Board needs your help!

This year, the Convention is taking place in Albany, NY from March 19-21, 2010, with the theme:

"Going Golden: A Solid Record of Service -- Celebrating 50 Years of Service, Leadership and Fellowship".

We need a club that is willing to help run the convention!

Would your club be interested in being the Host Club? Duties involve:

-- helping with registration

-- setting up for the dance

-- bringing/taking down decoration

-- distributing lifelines

-- working with the board to ensure that everything runs smoothly

The club must have 4-5 members willing to arrive in Albany by 2:00 PM on FRIDAY, MARCH 19th.

Hey Everyone!

Please look at the bottom of this post to download the 2009-2010 New York District Distinguished Member Award application! Each year, the New York District of Circle K International recognizes those members that have distinguished themselves through service to our clubs and communities. We strongly encourage all members to apply for this wonderful recognition program.

How do you win?

It's easy! All members meeting the criteria specified in the application will receive the award and be honored at District Convention 2010! All you need to do is certify that you have met the criteria laid out in the application, have it signed by your Club President (or Club Vice President, in the case that you are a Club President), and send it in to District Administrator John Keegan. It's as simple as that!

The application process is easier than ever!

In past years, there was an essay requirement to receive this award. However, we strongly believe it's important to make the process as easy as possible. After all, you each distinguish yourselves by your actions throughout the service year. As long as you meet the criteria and submit the application on time, you will be one of the recipients of the 2009-2010 New York District Distinguished Member Award!

But be aware of the due date!

All completed applications absolutely must be received by District Administrator Keegan no later than February 8th! See more details for submission in the application. If your club will not be meeting prior to the deadline, please still ensure that this application is disseminated to your members and submitted on time!

Board Appointments

Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to quickly congratulate the two newest appointees to the District Board.

Alex Lin of University at Buffalo was confirmed as Western Division Lieutenant Governor at Tri-K Weekend this past Saturday.

In order to focus more heavily on NYCKI alumni outreach, I have appointed International Representative Kristen Reed to the position of Alumni Relations Ad-Hoc Chair.

Hey New York!

I'd like to thank everyone who came to New York Speaking on the weekend of October 30th to November 1st and helped make it the success it was! I'm sure most of you have seen pictures of the weekend (and karaoke videos of a certain Immediate-Past International Officer serenading a certain Governor) as they gradually pop up on Facebook, but for those who missed it, here's a brief recap of what happened over the course of the weekend:

We collected around 40 food items for our food drive and collated storybooks and made friendship bracelets to distribute to hospitalized children. Thank you to everyone who took part in the service project!

Over the course of the weekend, the District Board elected three members to fill vacancies that had arisen. Please join me in welcoming the following members to the District Board:

One of the best parts of Circle K International is making friends through performing service. Try out some of these funky and fun service projects at your next meeting. It’ll help engage new members by showing them the joy of service, spice up your meetings and get some extra hours in.

Puff paint socks—Decorate the soles of socks with puff paint to create safety grips. Give them to senior citizens in nursing homes.
Warm blankets—Make homemade fleece blankets by tying the ends of long yards of fleece together. Donate them to your local neonatal intensive care unit waiting room.
Letters from home—Write thank you letters and cards to soldiers overseas.
Coloring books—Create coloring books by drawing shapes and objects on white paper with black markers. Donate them to your local library or daycare center.
Peanut butter jelly time—Make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to donate to your local food pantry or neighborhood center.
Make a child smile—Visit www.makeachildsmile.org to find terminally ill children who could use a smile or two. Create cards for them during your club meetings.
Keep warm—Host a “learn how to knit” session for your club and make scarves, hats and mittens to keep children warm this winter.
Door stoppers—Paint holiday themed door stoppers to give to your local nursing home or hospital.
Pillow hugs—Decorate plain white pillow cases with sunshine and flowers for your local hospital or kid’s camp.
Craft dough—Make and mix homemade modeling clay and donate it to your campus day care center or children’s library.

First-Ever New York DLSSP Recap

On the weekend of September 11th to 13th, we held the first-ever New York District Large Scale Service Project at Kamp Kiwanis in Taberg. Over the course of the weekend, we focused extensively on service and fellowship, and it was a great success! We bonded over icebreakers and team-building activities, and we even had a bonfire on Saturday night. We assisted the camp with filing, shellacking, laundry, and furniture-moving. The weekend was a lot of fun, and we hope you can make it next year!

New York District Executive Board Vacancies

Hey Everyone,

We are taking applications for those interested in serving the remainder of the service year in the capacity of either District Secretary or District Editor.

The duties of District Secretary include: taking minutes at all District Board meetings, compiling monthly district service hour and interclub totals, providing publications for club secretaries, speaking on behalf of Circle K when asked to do so, and assisting with any other projects or initiatives undertaken by the District Board.

The duties of District Editor are largely founded around serving as the chief publisher for the New York District. The District Editor publishes "Circling the Empire" (AKA "The CTE"), provides publications for club editors, works with NYCKITV on YouTube, speaks on behalf of Circle K when asked to do so, and assists with any other projects or initiatives undertaken by the District Board.

As both District Secretary and District Editor are elected positions on the voting board, both officers are expected to attend all meetings of the District Board. We have the following board meetings scheduled for this year: September (DLSSP), New York Speaking, Tri-K Weekend, January, February, and DCON.

Members who are interested in applying should send me letters of intent and any work samples they think will help in the selection process (newsletters, advertisements, writing samples, online resources, etc.). Applicants may also submit resumes to showcase experience and qualification. The deadline for application submission is September 8th.

If you have any questions at all about either position, please let me know. This is a great leadership opportunity, so if you're interested, I encourage you to apply!

On the night of August 24th, the Governors of Sub-Region F met to vote on the nominee that had been put forward for the office of Sub-Region F International Representative one week prior. Immediate-Past International President Kristen Reed has been elected to serve as our 2009-2010 Sub-Region F International Representative, serving the New York, New Jersey, New England, and Capital Districts of Circle K International on the International Board. Kristen is a rising senior at SUNY Potsdam and previously held the office of International Representative during the 2007-2008 service year.

Kiwanis District Convention

Greetings New York!

I got back from the Kiwanis District Convention yesterday. Long Island Lieutenant Governor Rickie Santer and Kiwanis Family Relations Chair Chelsea Saccu were also in attendance.

While at the Kiwanis District Convention, I spoke on behalf of the New York District of Circle K International, and with the Key Clubbers, we co-ran a forum on Circle K and Key Club.

We sold over $300 worth of NYCKI shirts and our Governor's Project pins. We also ran a raffle for the quilts that we made at our District Convention in March, and we raised $610 for the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center. We will be splitting the proceeds between the three centers. Thank you to all Circle K members who assisted with decorating the quilt squares, Assistant District Administrator Alison Mandel for sewing the quilts together, and to all Kiwanians who supported us in the raffle!

Two of the three quilts that we raffled off on behalf of the KPTC.

We have a few new potential chartering sites that were proposed to us by Kiwanians, so we'll be working with them to see what we can do to make these ideas come to light.

Unfortunately, I only have a handful of pictures from the Convention, as someone accidentally deleted everything from my camera on the last day.

Overall, the Convention was a lot of fun, and it helped prepare us prepare a little more for the coming semester.

Hey Everyone,

I got back from ICON yesterday afternoon, so I'm gradually getting back in the swing of things. I just wanted to quickly update you with election results from ICON. On Friday, Jason Stewart of the Ohio District was elected Circle K International President, and on Saturday, JJ Sadler of the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District was elected Circle K International President. Sub-Region F does not have a new International Representative yet, but we will be following protocol to elect one in the next few weeks.

I also wanted to extend congratulations and thanks to Immediate-Past International President Kristen Reed and Immediate-Past International Representative Eric Hotchkiss, both of our district, on successful terms. Kristen and Eric have been endlessly helpful and supportive of us, and I could neither be more thankful of them nor ask for a better President and Representative. They have served our district and organization well, and I am proud to call them my friends.

In the next few days, I'll try to update you with some more information from LSSP and ICON.

Busy Day at ICON

Today, we did the Circle K Amazing Race, the last activity of LSSP. Afterwards, we came back to the hotel, and a few of us went to the CLE (Club Leadership Education) Training (basically training us to be trainers). Kandra Sejas, the CKI Specialist, led this program, and she did a great job and presented us with many good ideas.

After CLE Training, we were able to check into our new hotel rooms. By the time we had managed to check in, we had very little time left before the opening session of ICON, so we quickly rehearsed our district cheer several times. Following this, I went to the rehearsal (and used a teleprompter for the first time in my life!).

Tonight, I also had the honor of carrying the American Flag onto the stage for the singing of the National Anthem.

Following the opening session, I assisted with the STUFH table at the service fair. The New York table looked amazing. LTG Jo did a great job in constructing the bookcase scene to showcase our District Project's focus on the importance of literacy.

We have a lot to do tomorrow morning, including an International Council meeting at 8AM, so I should probably try to get some sleep.

On Termites and Transitions

The Circle K International Large Scale Service Project will conclude tomorrow, and the International Convention will be beginning immediately thereafter.

Right now, I am sitting in the lobby of the Sheraton Birmingham (3:22 AM in Central Time), and we've been busy working with Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Birmingham Zoo.

While working with Habitat for Humanity, our weather was less than ideal (by far). We endured a torrential downpour and blistering heat while attempting to scrape and paint a house. Unfortunately, when the rains started (repeatedly), the hard work we had done in painting was quite literally washed away.

While volunteering for Big Brothers Big Sisters, we cleaned out a storage area and helped fold and sort tee-shirts. In the end, I was given five BBBS shirts and a stuffed tiger golf club cover, which was very fitting, as my team name is "The Tigers".

At the Birmingham Zoo, we washed garbage cans, tables, benches, and a number of other surfaces. We also were assigned to dismantle and destroy a shed. I must say that swinging a sledgehammer into the front wall of a shed repeatedly is quite therapeutic, especially after a long day of hard work, but the presence of thousands of termites was definitely a detractor from the experience.

Tomorrow is Fellowship Day (well, at least the first part of the day). We will then be transitioning into ICON, so we've still got a few days left in the sweltering south - er - Magic City.

Tomorrow morning, I'll be off to Birmingham for the Circle K Large Scale Service Project and International Convention. It should be a lot of fun. We'll be doing everything from volunteering at a zoo to electing a new International Board. I'll be back on the 9th, but I will try my best to provide an update while I'm away (I'm not saying that's going to happen, but I will try my best if time allows). The New York District Board met on Long Island last weekend (July 10^th to 12^th) for its summer board meeting, and we have some exciting updates!

This year's theme for New York Speaking (the weekend of October 30th to November 1st) is "It's A Service Life for Me!" In other words, we’ll be celebrating Halloween with a pirate theme and having a “Masqu-arrr-ade”!

I am also happy to announce that we have selected Charlotte Owens, a New York Circle K alum and a member of the Young Professionals of New York City Kiwanis, as our keynote speaker for New York Speaking. Charlotte is a former NYU Circle K member, a charter member of a Young Professionals Kiwanis, a Kiwanis Advisor to Key Club and Circle K, and an assistant district attorney in Kings County (Brooklyn), helping to keep the community a safer place.

We're still waiting to hear back from Kamp Kiwanis about whether we'll be able to have a clean-up/meeting there in September. Co-Conferences and Conventions Chairs Carolyn Frantz and Maggie Bryant will be looking into that.

We're also going to be placing a lot more focus on NYCKITV, so please continue submitting ideas for videos. If you'd like to make any on your own, please run them by me, and if they work out well, we can upload them to the YouTube channel.

In the next month or so, we'll also begin holding NYCKI online chats, and we'll try to hold them over the course of the year. They will focus on relevant topics over the course of the year.

I have selected LTG/Chair Josephine Lukito to serve as our Western Division Liaison, since she is the closest to the Western Division. She will keep in contact with the division until we find a Lieutenant Governor for the division.

For those attending ICON, our district shirts will cost $10 each, and our pins will be $3 apiece. OTIC Chair Kristen did an amazing job designing them! If you’re not attending ICON, don’t worry. We’ll be selling leftovers at New York Speaking! This is the design for our district pin, which centers around our Governor’s Project, “Neighborhood Nourishment: Feeding Our Friends and Families”:

We had a very successful meeting, and for that, I would like to extend thanks to some of the people who made the weekend possible.

I want to first thank Club Building Chair Kristin Leverone and her family for so graciously putting us up in their house for the weekend (in addition to feeding us dinner on Friday and breakfast on Saturday and Sunday!). I would also like to extend my thanks to LTG Rickie Santer and his family for arranging a meeting room for us at the Levittown Public Library and buying us lunch after the meeting on Saturday!

I am happy to announce a very exciting piece of news about one of my Key Club LTG counterparts this past year. Nancy Zhang, the IPD New York District Key Club LTG for Division 11, was elected Key Club International Trustee at the Key Club International Convention in Dallas on Saturday! Nancy did an amazing job as LTG, and I'm certain she's going to do an amazing job as International Trustee.

District Editor Vacancy

Hey NYCKI!

The position of New York District Editor recently became vacant, and we're looking for someone to fill that vacancy!

The New York District Editor is responsible for serving as a voting member of the District Board at all board meetings, working with club editors throughout the New York District, helping assist with and direct videos for NYCKITV on YouTube, and producing quarterly publications of "The CTE".

To apply, please submit a letter of intent and from three to five samples of your work (e.g. newsletters, service project advertisements, writing samples, etc.). In your letter, please describe who you are, what experience you have, what vision you have for completing the duties of the office, and what goals you would like to set should you be appointed.

All applicants must be enrolled at colleges with Circle K clubs that were of "Active" status for the 2008-2009 service year, and the appointee must pay dues for the 2009-2010 service year in the fall.

If you are interested in applying, please send me your letter of intent and work samples no later than midnight on July 17th. Please feel free to email me with any questions.
